empty palaces are given so much respect and dignity but what of the people living shoulder to shoulder in the city blocks wading through trash? like rats shitting where they eat humans are funny to be revering ancient sites whose sight is usually out of mind. garbage men do a lovely job undoing the disrespect done to pavement but what if the people cared a little more to place trash in location where you don't have to step over it just to get to the grocery store? and while i complain here i’ll also admit there is something aesthetically pleasing about these complementary colored trash bags littering the streets. perhaps i an romanticizing city life…

It's friday night
We'll pickup a pizza for the family
Then rent a DVD
The Playstation's glow lights up me and my brother's room
Now I'm an adult in a foreign country
I can't play games anymore

this night was interesting because i’d been roaming a part of sinsa i never visit. passing a cafe a random man screams hello and what ensued after that was nothing short of strange. i first join him in delivering a smoothie to a “famous” k-pop trainee, before making our way to the nearest seafood restaurant where he downs three bottles of soju and pays for the entire meal. he told me he was institutionalized by his family and that soju is his version of sex. for a moment i thought it was a scam where he’d leave me behind forcing me to pay the bill but he actually paid for it. i left after an hour of enduring his madness.

in the beginning i was pleased with the convenience store diet. cheap kimbap soaked in ramen paired with a steady rotation of packaged snacks. i thought id be eating healthier in this country but my desire has returned to its root - chocolate milk and noodles. my daily kimchi intake is trying to build a defense but the probiotic army is weakened by an onslaught of processed garbage flowing out of every city block’s GS25, straight into my stomach.

roaming the streets at night i see figures illuminated by lobby lights as they scurry off to attend to their errands, likely picking up dinner or booze. what lies behind the doors they've emerged from? a neatly organized way of living, prim and proper with a 9 to 5, or an apartment steeped in filth reflective of a jobless depraved hermit whose filth wafts down into the sewers and runs out into the streets? it's a bit haunting to think of all the nasty shit happening next door. if these walls could talk they'd be freed, but instead their creeks and tremors reveal just enough to theorize.

close your eyes for an hour outside. focus on your breath. how does your body feel at rest? feel any pain, heat, or coldness. notice the darkness behind your eyes. listen to your surroundings. watch your thoughts live and die next to your senses. see how they all exist in the same space as a matter of experience. then open your eyes and watch the orb of light rush in, joining that same space.

This temple sits on the side of Bukhansan and was established in 1011. The story goes that a young king was kicked out of his palace during a power struggle. A local monk took him in until he was old enough to return to the throne and reclaim his power. The king repaid the monk with this temple and sacred grounds. Now, Buddhist ceremonies are held here to "feed wandering spirits and starved demons." (Spirited Away, anyone?) The temple was burnt and heavily damaged during the Korean war but saw restoration in 1963. I was lucky enough to see this temple in person after waking one morning and deciding I deserve a life of my own.

Hanok houses are traditional Korean houses and spread across the country are many villages that have been preserved. This one, however, was brand new and rests just below the west face of Bukhansan, Seoul's tallest and most popular mountain for hiking. I sat below the mountain and ate a sandwich for breakfast from a Hanok styled CU. Then I roamed about the development scanning areas of interest. It reminded me of my 1 year long stint post high-school graduation where waking reality was replaced with obsessively building pagodas and eastern cities in Minecraft. Luckily I have shattered that habit and moved onto more adult-like excitements such as drinking too much and getting excited over olive oil.
